Co-hosted by American Visionary Art Museum and The Maryland Science Center, Body & Soul is a dynamic lecture series featuring renowned experts in the areas of medical science, physics, metaphysics, religion, art and visionary experience. The series is inspired by the serendipitous synchronous timing of American Visionary Art Museum's mega-exhibition, All Faiths Beautiful: From Atheism to Zoroastrianism, Respect for Diversity of Belief and The Maryland Science Center's Body Worlds: The Original Exhibition of Real Human Bodies.

Saturday, May 17 • 11 am-2 pm:  Shiny Happy Things with Bob Benson
As seen on the Universal Tree Of Life on Key Highway in front of the museum entrance. Learn to make your own “FLASHIES”: dynamic, sparkling decorations made from mirrors and marbles and such. Each participant will receive instruction on cutting and assembling and will leave this workshop with at least two finished decorations to keep and dangle. Saturday, June 7 • 10 am– 4 pm:  One-Day Mosaic Workshop with Rick Shelley
One-Day class for beginners or continuing students with artist Rick Shelley.Rick Shelley (seen at AVAM as “The man behind the curtain” during Theatre Serenissima) is also the co-founder of Baltimore Clayworks and a commissioned artist extraordinaire for mosaic projects all over the region—from the Mosaic map of the ancient and medieval world at The Walters Museum to Stations of the Cross in St. Francis Xavier’s in Hunt Valley. Schedule for One-Day Mosaic Class with Rick Shelley 10:00–11:00 Learn tools, cut mirror and stained glass, then watch Rick do a quick demo on making a small mosaic with glue on wood. 11:00–1:00 Make a small mosaic or two. 1:00–2:30 Bring a brown bag lunch and watch a fabulous slide show (fresh mosaics are drying in the sun or under a fan as we munch) then a quick tour to examine The Visionary’s own mosaic treasures. 2:30–4:00 Grout the mosaics, clean up, a few brief demos, questions, trouble shooting for projects, etc. Participants don’t need to bring supplies (shells, buttons, glass, beads, pebbles, etc. are welcome), but please pack a lunch. Saturday, June 14 • 11 am-2 pm:  Screen Painting Workshop with artist Jenny Campbell
Join Screen Artist Jenny Campbell for a one day workshop to paint your own Baltimore screen. Jenny is a self-taught screen painter and currently sells her small screens in various shops and galleries around Baltimore. According to Jenny, there is no “right” way to paint a screen. She will show the basics, but paint and style is up to each person. Bring your own screen—wire or fiberglass. Not too small, not too large. Make sure you mark the top and the outside so it will display right when you put it in your window at home. Bring brushes if you have favorites. Paints and brushes provided. Age 16 and older. July 8–26 • 3 One-week Sessions • 10AM–3PM:   VISIONARY EXPERIENCE SUMMER CAMP: Weaving Yarns, Telling Tales & Creating Chronicles
This summer at the American Visionary Art Museum, we will be hosting our first ever Visionary Experience. For three consecutive weeks in the month of July we will be opening up our doors to middle school students for this opportunity to enjoy experiences with Visionary artists, fascinating artwork, and tons of hands-on creating and collaborating in puppetry, theatre, writing, visual arts and more! Spend time with AVAM staff and our visiting Visionary Artists to create individual and group works relating to the ideas involved in the Telling of Tales. The three weeks (which can be experienced individually or as a whole!) will conclude with a Visionary Salon where students will be invited to showcase their creations and performances. Families and friends will be invited to spend the day at AVAM and immerse themselves in the students' Visionary tales.
