Creative Workshops for ages 8 & up!

AVAM is excited to announce a new spin on our After School programming. Presenting AVAM in the Afternoon: a series of special, interactive workshops for ages 8 and up! Join us in building your inner creativity as we explore the world of visionary art, meet guest artists, and engage in creative projects of our own. Each week will feature a different hands-on activity and/or artist demonstration. Whether you're a beginner or a visionary guru, you'll discover some new inspiration and fun at AVAM in the Afternoon!

Workshop Details:

  • Workshops will be held on select Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm - 5:30pm in the Jim Rouse Visionary Center, 2nd Floor Classroom.
  • Cost: $10 Per participant, per workshop
  • Pre-Registration Required. *Registration must be made at least 1 week in advance. Please read our Workshop Cancellation policy below.

VISIONARY WEATHER INSTRUMENTS: Inspired by our visionary artists that use unconventional materials
Wednesday, April 10 • 3:30pm-5:30pm

April showers bring May flowers... and a little sun can't hurt! In this workshop we'll use fun materials, like beans and ping-pong balls, to construct colorful rain sticks and sunshine shakers to use and display at home!

TINKERING WORKSHOP: "Mind in Motion" with Michael Smith-Welch
Thursday, April 18 • 3:30pm-5:30pm

Visiting artist and master tinkerer Michael Smith-Welch returns to lead this exciting workshop about electromagnetic motors! Immerse yourself in automata and autonomous art. Build a machine that animates the movement in your mind!

WHAT DREAMS MAY COME: Visionary Dream Catchers and Dream Scenes inspired by Mars Tokyo
Wednesday April 24 • 3:30pm-5:30pm

The possibilities are endless when you have access to our classroom's super stash of interesting materials! Inspired by visionary artist Mars Tokyo and her Theaters of the 13th Dimension, we will create miniature dream scenes, and a visionary dreamcatcher to capture more visions outside the classroom!

SHADOW PUPPETS with Annie Howe, inspired by Calvin and Ruby Black
Wednesday May 8 • 3:30pm-5:30pm

Visiting artist Annie Howe blends elements of drawing, paper cutting, and colorful gels in this storytelling shadow puppet workshop! We will learn about the "neighborhood" puppet performances of Calvin and Ruby Black, and make our own puppets to perform with!

MOSAIC MANIA: Inspired by Loring Cornish and Patty Kuzbida
Wednesday May 15 • 3:30pm-5:30pm

We will explore the various mosaic materials and techniques used by Visionary Artists, and construct our own mosaic masterpieces! From mosaic sculptures to blinged-out buses and microwave ovens - come immerse yourself in the world of mosaics!

TINKERING WORKSHOP: "Visionary Gaming" with Michael Smith-Welch
Thursday May 23 • 3:30pm-5:30pm

Visiting artist and master tinkerer Michael Smith-Welch returns once again to bring out your inner gamer. We'll tinker with new technologies and build our own visionary game controllers!

 

Workshop Cancellation Policy:

Our program has a limited number of registrants and we often carry a waiting list. Registrations also allow us to pay for visiting artists and supplies. Fees are non-refundable, however may be transferred to a future workshop of equal or lesser value, up to 1 time.
