Lusitania

Wayne Kusy

Zanvyl Krieger Main Building, 1st Floor Gallery

Wayne Kusy started building ships out of toothpicks in the 5th grade for a school project. He continues building them from the same material today, though they are much larger and more complex. He completed "The Lusitania" in 1994 over two and a half years with 193,000 toothpicks. When asked about the ships, Kusy said, "It's a challenge. There's a lot of people who like to climb mountains like Mount Everest...I choose to build models. It's safer."
