Rebecca Alban Hoffberger Visionary Exhibition Fund
Recognizing the indelible contribution and impact of American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) Founder, Executive Director, and Primary Curator Rebecca Alban Hoffberger, the AVAM Board of Directors has established the Rebecca Alban Hoffberger Visionary Exhibition Fund to secure her enduring legacy of creating and launching thematic exhibitions at the museum, showcasing intuitive artists and visionaries of all kinds.
It is the illuminating content of essays and visuals in AVAM’s thematic annual exhibitions that sets it apart from other museums and artfully underscores key issues of human justice, ethics, and human need.
Without exception, AVAM’s exhibition themes have explored the full range of what it means to be a human being – glory and warts – and have included the latest visionary scientific breakthroughs, inventions, and fresh insights, right alongside time-honored global wisdom and humor.
With a goal of $5 million, the Rebecca Alban Hoffberger Visionary Exhibition Fund will ensure a designated, sustainable pool of financial support to make possible AVAM’s ongoing commitment to thematic exhibitions that feature original artworks produced by self-taught individuals, typically without formal training, whose works arise from an innate personal vision reveling foremost in the creative act itself.
Rebecca’s unwavering vision and leadership over the past 26 years has distinguished AVAM as a Congressionally-designated national museum and education center, hailed by leading news, travel, and trade publications as the most desirable destination in Baltimore. In 2021, the readers of both Baltimore Magazine and the Baltimore Sun voted AVAM “Best Museum.”
Both in 2018 and 2019, USA Today cited AVAM as the “Best Museum in Maryland,” and The New York Times confirmed that the museum "deserves all of the praise that has been heaped upon it since it opened,” while CNN declared that AVAM is "one of the most fantastic museums anywhere in America."
AVAM is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization and our federal tax-exempt number is 52-1608934.
