Dick Brown

Dick Brown was born in Oxford, Mississippi, the eldest of two boys. His father worked as a school superintendent employed by the Department of Defense and Brown's mother was an elementary school psychologist. The family lived in Spain, Turkey, and Cuba as the father's work required. Returning to earn his doctorate in clinical psychology at University of Southern Mississippi, Brown came to Baltimore to work in therapeutic foster care in 2003 and found "his true home." Today, Brown practices counseling among Baltimore's poorest citizens in East Baltimore. A self-taught painter and mosaic artist, Dr. Dick Brown generously donated his 2003 "Bluebird of Happiness" sculpture to AVAM. This painted, sculptural work is featured as an iconic cornerstone of joy at the southern end of the national museum's 1.1 acre "Wonderland," urban campus. Brown has applied his original mosaic artistry to his own Apex Counseling Center's building, located at 3200 Eastern Avenue in Baltimore.
