The American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) is the national repository for self-taught artistry and intuitive thinking. AVAM is dedicated to our Education Goals and inspiring visitors to seek their own creativity and recognize wonder in the world around them.


The American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM)’s Education Department is a fast-paced, fun environment that manages all visiting groups, on-site educational programming, volunteers and outreach programming. The Education Department at AVAM is seeking an undergraduate student to assist with planning of AVAM’s Kinetic Sculpture Race and the daily operations of the Department. Each day, the AVAM Education Team hopes to inspire creative confidence in visitors of all ages through hands-on artmaking workshops, educational tours and community programs.


Kinetic Sculpture Race event preparation:
  • Creating props and prepping materials for the race including but not limited to: Finish Line banners, team medals, trophies, team and volunteer packets

  • Assisting with the race preparation of AVAM’s kinetic sculpture, Fifi the Pink Poodle

  • Working the Kinetic Sculpture Race event happening May 2nd 2026


Daily K-12 programming:
  • Preparing supplies for daily hands on art workshops with K-12 students

  • Assisting with facilitation of hands on art workshops with K-12 students

qualifications

This internship is available to undergraduate students studying fine art, art history, art education, museum studies, arts administration, and students interested in pursuing a museum career.


Internship candidates should have:
  • Experience working with students/children

  • Passion for the arts and/or arts education, community art programming

  • Strong ability to function as a team player in a fast-paced environment, but also able to work independently

  • Helpful, friendly, positive attitude with an attention to detail

  • Familiarity with AVAM’s Kinetic Sculpture Race

  • Availability 2-3 days per week


The internship position will require approximately 15 hours a week which can be adjusted to best meet the student’s and the Department’s schedule. Start and end dates are flexible but will likely be January through mid May. The pay is $17 per hour. Candidates will be contacted via email for a Zoom interview.
