About the Event

The  American Visionary Art Museum, in partnership with the Jewish Museum of Maryland, joins other arts and cultural organizations across Baltimore for a community reading of selections from "Four Hundred Souls: A Community History of African America, 1619 to 2019" written by Ibrahim Kendi and Keisha N. Blain. The event commemorates Juneteenth, the day when Union troops arrived on June 19, 1865 in Texas, the westernmost state at the time, with news of the Emancipation Proclamation declaring enslaved people free. This community reading will deepen our understanding of the history of the holiday and explore its immense, contemporary significance.
